LONG-serving midfielder Peter Murphy has brought an end to his time with Stanley after choosing to join League Two rivals Wycombe.

The 24-year-old joined the Reds at 16 before progressing through the youth ranks and into the first team.

The popular Liverpudlian was out of contract at the end of last season and although he was offered new terms, he was expected to move on. And last Friday it was confirmed that Murphy had signed a two-year deal with the Chairboys.

Murphy made his first-team debut in April 2008 and played in all outfield positions for the Reds before establishing himself as a goal-scoring centre-midfielder last term. He scored nine times in 43 league starts to reach a total of 176 games for Stanley, scoring 18 goals.

“I thought when he left Accrington he’d go into a higher league,” said former team-mate James Gray. “We finished above Wycombe and they could have gone out of the League.

“I would have loved Murph to stay but I wish him all the best – except when he plays us of course!

“He’ll be tough to play against. I just hope he doesn’t kick me!”
