Runners battle rain

9/ 5/2008

ALMOST 200 runners braved the wet weather on Sunday to take part in the annual Hameldon Hill Race.

It was the largest field in 10 years at the six mile fell race, organised by Clayton-le-Moors Harriers.

They Harriers made up a third of the field but over a quarter were local people just ‘having a go’ at the tricky race which included 1100ft of climbing - and plenty of mud.

The race was won for the second year running by Blackburn Harriers star Thomas Cornthwaite in 37 minutes and 10 seconds - but he was only two seconds faster than second placed Richard Burney of Liverpool.

Accrington runner Lee Passco, who competes for Preston Harriers, was fourth home in 40.22.

A hat-trick of Clayton Harriers - Gary Shaw, Mark Aspinall and Mike Wallis - came in seventh, eighth and ninth. John Wierczorek was the first Accrington Road Runner home in 28th place.

First lady to cross the line was Pendle athlete Katie Trickett in 49.26 followed by Clayton’s Anna Kelly 50.31.

The first youngster was Jack Dugdale of Clayton. Clayton’s Brian Leathley and Todmorden’s Derek Clutterbuck were the oldest competitors in the Over 75 age group.
