The search is on for the 2013 Accrington Carnival Queen sponsored by the Accrington Observer.

The lucky girl chosen will have the honour of leading the parade in front of thousands of onlookers at this year’s Accrington Carnival, which is being organised by Accrington Lions Club.

Entry is open to women aged between 16 and 30 who live or work in Hyndburn.

Tracy Simmonds, of  the Accrington Lions Carnival committee, encouraged as many women as possible to enter the contest.

She said: “This is a very popular event and over the years has attracted up to 28 girls. Following the Carnival the winner may be asked to attend other events over the following two years.

“It is a lovely opportunity to get involved with the local community and support worthwhile causes.”

The winner will receive a whole host of prizes including £400 courtesy of Accrington and Rossendale College. Gareth Tidman,  editor of the Accrington Observer, said the paper was ‘delighted’ to be sponsoring the Carnival Queen competition.

He said: “We have long history with Accrington Carnival and the Carnival Queen competition, and we are pleased to be involved in the contest once again.

“The Carnival is a fantastic event and we hope this year’s will be bigger and better than ever.”

Pictures of entrants will then appear in the Observer over the coming weeks.

Judging will take place at Accrington Town Hall on Tuesday, May 21 and entrants must be available on that day as well as the day of the Carnival Saturday, June 15. All entries must be submitted by Friday, May 10. Entrants will not be asked to appear in swimwear and judging will be in the form of a parade in long or short evening wear.

The winner will also receive a pamper day session at Seasons Hair and Beauty Salons, £100 for a dress to wear on Carnival Day from Extreme, Water Street, a tiara and £40 voucher for shoes and handbags courtesy of Julie at Barbara Kays, Whalley Road, Accrington, flowers from Garlands Florist, Union Road, Accrington, and hair and make-up on Carnival Day at 12A Blackburn Road, Rising Bridge.
