A man from Accrington has died following a crash after being chased by police.

The collision happened at shortly after 9pm on Wednesday, December 9 when a Renault Captur which had been travelling Westbound on the M55 collided with the Ashworth Circle roundabout at the start of Yeadon Way.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a man in his 50s from Accrington, suffered multiple injuries and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Lancashire Constabulary confirmed the vehicle was subject to a short chase by police prior to the collision and the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

A Constabulary spokesman said: “This collision has cost someone their life and our thoughts are with his family at this time.

“We immediately referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), this is standard practice following a death after police contact.”

The IPCC attended the scene overnight and have determined that it will be an independent investigation.
