Two men from Hyndburn have been charged for offences during the East Lancashire derby between Blackburn Rovers and Burnley.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw and police said it passed off without any major incidents.

Officers made nine arrests in total, all for minor offences.

Among those were Matthew Clitheroe, 27, of St Huberts Street, Great Harwood who has been charged with criminal damage.

Daniel Riley, 40, of Willows Lane, Accrington was also charged using threatening words or behaviour.

Both have been bailed to appear at Burnley Magistrates Court on Tuesday, October 1

Gold Commander Superintendent Terry Woods thanked fans attending the derby saying: “I would like to thank the supporters for being patient, especially around travel arrangements.

“Our sole aim was to ensure that everyone could enjoy the game safely and that the law abiding decent supporters didn’t have their day ruined by a small minority.

“Officers will remain on duty both in Blackburn and Burnley to deal with any other issues that may occur and to provide reassurance to people who work and live in the town centres.”
