Residents nearby said it 'looked like bonfire night' after the van went up in flames on Perth Street in Accrington.

Three fire engines from Hyndburn were called to tackle the blaze and fire bosses said there was a 'risk of an explosion' after gas cylinders were found nearby.

Zeenab Rashid, who works at the nearby News Spot shop on Ormerod Street, said it was 'very scary' incident.

She said: “My husband rang me from town and said he could see smoke near our shop and was worried.

“When I looked outside I saw massive flames. It looked like bonfire night.

“We don't know who set it off. It was on fire for about 15 minutes before the emergency services arrived and then it started to set fire to a gate.

“There was a lot of people around wondering what was happening and taking pictures.”

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said the campervan has been there about two weeks and is believed to belong to nearby travellers.

He said: “I was at the top of the road with my mates when we saw smoke and flames and when we came down we realised the campervan was on fire.

“A few minutes later the fire brigade came down and put it out.”

Richard Edney, of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, said they were called to the scene at around 8.10pm on Sunday, April 27.

He said: “When we arrived it was well alight and two teams of fire fighters used hose reels and breathing apparatus to try and put it out.

“However within minutes of getting there we established there was a risk of an explosion due to gas cylinders close by so we had to safely secure those.

“It's believed to be suspicious. The police attended and we are now working with them to establish what went on.”

Lancashire Police said officers cordoned off the scene are making enquiries to track down the owner.

A spokesperson said the incident has not yet been crimed and an investigation is under way.
