Accrington Academy is ‘improving rapidly’ according to inspectors.

Ofsted have rated the school ‘good’ during their latest inspection and praised school bosses for their ‘high expectations and unswerving commitment’ to students.

A team of five inspectors visited the school and sixth form last month for a two-day visit and observed teachers in a wide range of subjects.

They also spoke to students, staff and governors and conducted an online questionnaire to gauge the views of parents.

In her report, lead inspector Judith Straw rated the Academy good across all five key areas

The report said: “The Principal, senior and middle leaders and governors share high expectations and an unswerving commitment to ensure that every student achieves their goals, whatever their circumstances. The academy is improving rapidly.

“Students’ behaviour around the school is good and they are proud of their school. Students enjoy the many opportunities to attend clubs, extra classes and develop leadership skills. The subjects taught and the enrichment opportunities available prepare students well for the future and contribute effectively to students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

“The sixth form is going from strength to strength. Numbers are increasing and most students make very good progress, often from lower than average starting points.”

Ofsted said the Academy needs to improve its teaching quality and help Sixth Form students from disadvantaged backgrounds in order to be rated outstanding.

Principal Andy O’Brien said: “This Ofsted report bears testimony to the hard work of students, staff and parents and recognises the continuing improvement at the Academy.

“It is also a wonderful reflection of our Academy and I am particularly pleased that our Sixth Form has gained much praise, with the positive attitude of our Sixth Form students setting the tone for the rest of the Academy. We will not, however, allow ourselves to become complacent and will continue with our relentless drive to improve and provide the best education for the students in our care.

“Our determination and passion to make the Academy the best that it can be will continue as we work towards our goal of ‘outstanding’ by the time of the next inspection.”
