A cafe venerating the Accrington Pals is set to open in the Market Hall.

The Pals Cafe will open its doors this weekend and is set to be a celebration of the Accrington Pals Regiment, which was tragically wiped out during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

Karen Higgins, 36, of Avenue Parade, Huncoat will hold a grand opening of the cafe on Saturday, October 24.

The former support worker said: “I am very excited, this is my first business and a new adventure for me.

“We wanted to go with the Pals theme as they are so important to Accrington and we thought it would be nice to honour their memory.”

She added: “As we have been carrying out work people have been asking about it and have been saying what a good idea it is. People have also been coming along and sharing their memories.”

Husband Eamonn, who is a councillor for Huncoat, added: “We have transformed the cafe inside and it has been kitted out as a tribute for the Pals.

“It looks fantastic and we cannot wait to open.”

The Pals Cafe will open Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 4pm, except on Wednesdays when it will close at 1.30pm.
