Accrington’s new £500,000 police station will open ‘behind schedule’, council bosses have confirmed.

Hyndburn council leader Miles Parkinson revealed in January this year that the new base on Broadway would open in May after a 12-week refit. But he says the station is now timetabled to open in August due to delays.

Coun Parkinson said: “We were hoping for it to open in May but we had to resolve all the planning issues.

“It’s been held up when they were going through the planning process, they had to fit it out for the specifications of the police station and get them approved with due process - sorting out the communications aerial, parking spaces and contractors.

“But it’s on the way now and nearly complete.”

The Lancashire Police and Crime Commissioner’s office has not confirmed a specific opening date for the new station, but a spokesperson said it is understood the new premises will be opened later “this summer”.

The PCC spokesman added: “In the meantime, the current station at Spring Gardens remains in use and residents can use the public enquiries desk there as normal.”
