Armed Forces Day celebrations began in Hyndburn when the Armed Forces Day flag was raised in Accrington.

The ceremony took place outside the Town Hall where the Deputy Lord Lieutenant presented the flag to Mayor Marlene Haworth.

Armed Forces Week will culminate in a fun day at Gatty Park in Church on Saturday, June 27.

It will feature a packed programme of events starting at 12.30pm with an opening ceremony and the raising of the flag.

The free fun day will then run from 1pm to 4pm and includes a a poppy picnic, stalls, children’s games, arts and crafts, music and a bowling competition. The Parlour@Elmfield Café will also be open to customers.

Donations will go towards Byng House, Southport which is run by the Royal British Legion, providing break services for members of the Armed Forces.

Coun Haworth said: “Armed Forces Week is Hyndburn’s chance to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community. Thank you to all the organisations who have worked together to organise the fun day and to those who are taking part.”
