A post office branch has closed down following a spate of recent robberies and burglaries.
Bosses at the Baxenden branch based inside the chemist shop on Manchester Road have posted the closure notice on the shop window.
It comes only a few days after three masked men wielding machetes targeted the nearby Rising Bridge post office.
The offenders threatened the postmistress, her husband and their son before making off with thousands of pounds in cash.
The post office in Rishton was also targeted on June 5, the second time in seven months, when raiders wearing ‘CSI-style’ suits tied up the postmaster before stealing a ‘substantial amount of cash’.
The Baxenden notice said: “Post Office closed. Due to recent incidents at local post offices this branch is closed and all monies returned to Post Office Ltd.
“Nearest post office is Abbey Street, Accrington.”
Ward councillor Terry Hurn said he was ‘very sorry’ to see it go and said it follows the ‘trauma’ of the Rising Bridge incident on July 3.
He said: “I’ve very sorry to see it go as it’s another service gone in Baxenden.
“I went to see the lady who runs the Baxenden Post Office and she informed me she had closed it. It was not something she had taken lightly and did it with a heavy heart.
“It really stems back to the incident at Rising Bridge and the trauma of what went on.
“When they got told about it they had a shop full of customers and children there too.
“It has been there for two or three years since the old Post Office closed and it was really great of her to take it on.”
Coun Hurn said residents will now have to travel to either Rising Bridge or Accrington which ‘isn’t ideal’.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Higher Baxenden Post Office.
“We are working hard to restore services to the area as soon as possible.
“In the meantime, customers can access Post Office services at any branch including Accrington Post Office.”
Lancashire Police are appealing for information relating to both the Rising Bridge and Rishton incidents and no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information should call police on 101.
