A GRIEVING family held a charity night in memory of a former Accrington Stanley chairman.

Dennis Cook was chairman and owner of the club and passed away in April this year after battling cancer.

His son Howard helped organise a charity night and raffle for Myeloma UK in memory of his dad who was described at the time of his death as 'a great loss to the community'.

Howard, 46, said the event at Enfield Cricket Club had been attended by around 160 people and included a singer, auction and raffle, raising almost £2,000 for the charity.

He said: “It was a really good night under the circumstances. He had a lot of involvement in local sport with Accrington Stanley, Padiham and Great Harwood Town with football and he did a lot of coaching at Enfield Cricket Club as well.

“In sporting circles he's really well known it  unbelievable the amount of people who know him and it was a good turnout.

“My dad was all about giving back and he would have liked us to have done something like this.”

He added Dennis' granddaughter Ashleigh had sung at the event and two of the nurses who treated him at the Royal Blackburn Hospital had also attended.

The family have now presented a cheque for £2,000 including money raised at the charity night and money raised from KLF Theatre Arts, which Ashleigh is a part of, to the charity.

As well as managing the Reds, he was a life-long member at Enfield Cricket Club, a football and cricket coach and a proud grandad-of-five.

He died on Friday, April 19 aged 72.

Dennis, a former aircraft engineer, was married to Pat and had two sons Howard and Martyn and was a grandfather of five.
