Council land in Clayton-le-Moors is set to be sold off as part of an assets review. Bosses are undertaking a review of all of the borough’s land assets.

The panel has identified 15 areas in the town with some recommended to be sold off.

A report by the overview and scrutiny committee recommends land off Lower Barnes Street and land off Sparth Road near the Royal Oak Pub should be disposed of for housing development.

A derelict site next to the Albion Pub on Whalley Road could also be sold to the business for use as a beer garden.

Other areas that could be auctioned off include land near St Mary’s Primary School opposite the Wellington Street and Whalley Road junction, and land off Warwick Avenue and Junction 7. Popular sites including the Wellington Street car park, Mercer Park, Wilson’s Playing Fields and Burnley Road Recreation Ground are set to be retained.

Allotments at Sweet Briar Close and Chequers could also be developed or extended following the review.

Ward councillor Nick Collingridge, who was involved in the decision-making process, said the land recommendations were “sensible”. He said: “There are certain pieces of land that we agreed could be sold off to bring in some capital receipts.

“I’m all for this review as it gives people an idea of what we have and what the possibilities are for it.

“Most of the recommendations put through are sensible and I’m happy that the scrutiny board have listened and taken on board what we have said.”

Hyndburn council leader and Altham ward councillor Miles Parkinson said the review was part of a wider assessment of borough assets.

He said: “At this stage in the process we are going round the townships and the committee are coming forward with recommendations.

“We will sit down and may choose to accept some and not others.”
