A community group has successfully raised the funds to take the village pub off the market.

The Dog Community Action Group is celebrating after the owner of The Dog Inn in Belthorn, near Oswaldtwistle agreed to take the pub off the market.

It was sold to a private developer last year, but the group succeeded in getting the site registered as an Asset of Community Value in April and in just under a month have managed to raise £163,000 towards the £180,000 asking price.

Jean Bain, of the action group, said: “We are buying it, we have instructed our solicitors as have the owners to start working through the details.

“We are still raising funds to get the remaining £17,000, but it has been taken off the market until we get that full amount.

“The response has just been amazing really, we have had people from Darwen, Blackburn, Rotherham all getting in touch to buy shares.”

She added: “We are all really chuffed. There is life in the old dog yet.”

The group is raising funds through a community share scheme. Shares can be bought for a minimum of £250 or a maximum of £25,000.
