Ten new full-time jobs are set to be created under plans for a supermarket ‘drive-thru’ cafe.

Aldi has submitted proposals to Hyndburn council to build the cafe next to its existing store on Heys Lane in Great Harwood.

If approved, the building would be sublet to another business and not run by Aldi.

Bosses said they had considered other vacant retail units and areas of the town to create the cafe, including units on Queen Street, Church Street and the former bank on the corner of Queen Street and the Town Hall Square, however they were either not large enough or not ‘suitable’ to ‘accommodate the drive-thru element of the proposal’.

The cafe would be built on vacant brownfield land with most of the trees being removed.

The application by Aldi follows recent successful proposals to extend the store’s opening hours on Monday to Saturday and increase the car parking capacity to 112 spaces.

Documents sent to the council say that 10 full-time jobs would be created and claim the scheme would not affect the environment or amenity of residents on nearby Station Road.

A decision will be made later this year.
