Corrie star Julie Hesmondhalgh will leave Coronation Street amid emotional scenes this week.

Accrington-born actress Julie plays one of the show’s best-loved characters Hayley Cropper, who will take her own life before treatment for pancreatic cancer renders her incapable of doing so.

Julie, 43, said the scenes, which see devoted husband Roy by her side in the programme on Monday, January 20, are beautifully written.

She said: “My husband and I watched it and there was loads of kitchen roll and an empty bottle of whisky.”

Julie has played the transgender character Hayley for 15 years before filming her final scenes in November. She added: “Seeing David’s portrayal of Roy was incredible.

“He doesn’t agree with Hayley’s decision and as actors we decided there should be awkwardness between them to reflect the fact there isn’t consensus – the language between them is quite formal.”

Julie said she has been surprised viewers have stuck with the cancer storyline despite it being difficult to watch.

She said: “I genuinely thought people would switch off; I thought it would be too much for people.

“But everyone has been affected by cancer and the overwhelming majority of people seem to have found some solace in watching it; some have even found it quite cathartic.

“It’s been a real honour to have been part of it.”

Julie is in the running for a National Television Award on Wednesday, January 22 at a ceremony in London.
