Care home staff have been praised for their ‘exemplary bravery’ after a fire broke out in a resident’s bedroom.

Firefighters from Hyndburn were called to Addison Court in Accrington after the fire started in the toilet area.

The occupant of the room was rescued by staff and when fire crews arrived they used breathing apparatus and hose reels to extinguish the fire.

Two residents and a staff member were treated at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

The bedroom was left heavily smoke logged and smoke damage was also caused to a corridor and another room upstairs.

An investigation has been launched. Crew manager Chris Archer said they believe the fire was possibly caused by a faulty extractor fan and praised staff for their actions.

He said: “The staff at the nursing home carried out a rescue of the occupant in the fire compartment, further rapid evacuation of other rooms and contacted the fire service promptly, which ensured a successful outcome to this incident.

“The staff showed exemplary bravery in the face of danger and should be commended for their selfless actions.”

The incident on Addison Road happened just after 10pm on Wednesday, March 12.

A spokesman for the care home said: “Thanks to the prompt actions of our staff, who acted in an exemplary fashion and followed our robust procedures, a very small number of residents were moved efficiently and safely from the premises.

“We also are extremely grateful to the fire crew who attended the scene. “No one was hurt and the damage was confined to a small area. “This matter has not affected our ability to accommodate and care for our residents.”
