Excitement is building with just ten days to go until the opening of first direct rail service between Accrington and Manchester in more than 40 years.

The reinstating of the 500 metre stretch of track known as the Todmorden Curve, will officially open for its first service on May 17.

The multi-million pound investment is a result of ten-year partnership between Lancashire County Council, Burnley Council, Network Rail and Northern Rail, and has been backed by commuters, councillors and MP’s.

The £8.8m stretch of track was the subject of huge delays to its opening after it was hit by a series of setbacks including a lack of rolling stock.

The opening of the stretch of track is expected to slash journey times from Accrington to Manchester Victoria to 63 minutes.

Tickets will start at £10.10 for an off peak day return.

A spokesperson for Northern Rail said: “Bringing better services, improved stations and a positive experience is key to keeping our customers happy.

"From May 17, our customers will benefit from a direct service to Manchester; opening up a wealth of opportunities to the local community, preparations are well underway for celebrating the new and improved opportunity.”
