Police do not believe his condition is life-threatening.

Police said the boy was with three adults and a number of other children when the collision with the Vauxhall Vectra happened.

Yakub Chobdad, who runs Y & M newsagents, on nearby Pendle Street, said he has heard the boy is recovering well.

He said: “They say he is okay. I asked the family yesterday because they come in here quite often. Brown Street is a busy street and there are always cars parked there. It is a dangerous road for accidents.”

Central ward councillor Mohammad Ayub said he will look into installing traffic calming measures along Brown Street.

He said: “On this road we have had accidents before a couple of times. There’s a lot of traffic going up and down there all the time. We think we might ask for some traffic calming there.”

No one else was injured in the collision and the road was closed for some time following the incident.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said the boy remains in a stable condition.

PS John Jennings-Wharton, of the road policing team, said: “We are keen to speak to anyone that may have witnessed the collision so that we can establish exactly how it came to occur.”
