Four friends from Baxenden have raised hundreds of pounds for charity after taking part in the Great Manchester Swim.

Michelle Rouine, Marisa Bannan, Charlotte Thind and her daughter Grace Thind swam a mile at Salford Quays and collected more than £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Marisa, who is a secretary at Lee Royd Nursery School in Accrington, said they are all ‘very proud’ to complete the challenge.

She said: “We decided around the New Year that we wanted to do something for charity and also do something we hadn’t done before. None of us are swimmers really and we just went for it.

“We all managed to complete it in under one hour and it was freezing cold.

“It’s the first time we had ever been in outdoor water and it was a bit of a culture shock.

“We all had a great day and we all wanted to complete it to raise money for a great cause. We are really proud of ourselves.

“We must have enjoyed it that much that we are now contemplating swimming in Windermere next year.”

Marisa, 42, said she also received support from the Baxenden and Accrington Slimming World groups, where she is a leader.
