Hollyoaks star Nikki Sanderson is set to be the special guest at a family fun day in Great Harwood in aid of World Down Syndrome Day.

Nikki will be joined by Eva Lorente, from Oswaldtwistle, who has the condition and plays the role of Minnie Blake on the Channel 4 soap.

The event has been organised by Accrington Lions president Caz Moreton who is Eva’s aunt and main chaperone for when she films on Hollyoaks.

It is the second time the family fun day will take place at Snuffy’s Bar on Commercial Road following the inaugural success last year.

Dozens of people, including parents and children from across East Lancashire, attended last year’s event and raised more than £1,200.

Biker Anthony ‘Ants’ Gerahty also shaved off his beard on the day and raised £400, while Snuffy’s managers Pat and Debs also decorated the bar in blue and yellow, which are the colours of Down syndrome awareness.

Gary Britland, of the Accrington Lions, said they wanted to repeat the event this year and raise even more money and awareness for Down syndrome.

He said: “Nikki Sanderson was due to come last year but couldn’t make it in the end but she will be here this year.

“All the money will go to a great cause. There’s quite a lot of interest so far so we are hoping for a good turnout and really nice family fun day.

“Last year we had a sponsored beard shave and had a raffle for football memorabilia and shirts. We are going to do the same thing this year and get more prizes.

“The weather was really nice last year and if it is again then we will have things outside.”

It will take place on Saturday, March 19 from 12.30pm to 4.30pm.
