Young police cadets from Hyndburn have been busy helping out at a variety community activities across the borough.

The 16 teenage cadets joined in a 'Fright Night' at Rhyddings Park in Oswaldtwistle and helped usher the crowds at the recent Rotary Club bonfire and firework display at Accrington Cricket Club.

The team also took part in a 10-mile sponsored walk and raised more than £700 for charity.

They started at the Nick of Pendle and finished at Accrington Town Hall where they were officially thanked by Hyndburn Mayor Judith Addison.

Both the senior and junior cadets joined together to help build a sensory path for teachers and staff at All Saint's school in Clayton-le-Moors.

They worked alongside deputy headteacher Nicola Saporita-Clarke and staff member Gordon Preston and will go back to the school next month to finish off the project.

Sgt Kathryn McIntyre, who co-ordinates the cadet scheme in Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley, said they have many more projects in the pipeline for the cadets to help out with.

She said: “They seem to be really enjoying themselves, whilst building skills such as team work, people skills and using their own initiative.

“Before Christmas people will see the cadets out and about bag packing at Sainsbury’s in Clitheroe, tree planting at St Christopher’s CE High School in Accrington and there are plans for a potential swimathon.

“We will additionally be collecting money in Oswaldtwistle Mills so if people would like to donate to help us run the cadet scheme, please give what you can.

“The cadets really do appreciate every penny and will put the money to good use so they can make a difference in their community as well as their own lives, building on and learning new skills that will stay with them.”

The Lancashire police cadet scheme provides teenagers between 13 to 18 the chance to develop their skills and undertake fundraising activities.
