The most dangerous roads in Hyndburn can this week be revealed by the Observer.

New figures obtained by the Observer under Freedom of Information rules have shown which of our roads are most treacherous when it comes to crashes and fatalities.

They show that there have been at least six fatalities on our roads in the last three years.

In joint first place is Union Road in Oswaldtwistle and Whalley Road in Clayton-le-Moors which have both seen 26 crashes since January 2010.

Meanwhile four stretches of Blackburn Road in different towns made it on to the list of accident hotspots. The worst was the Oswaldtwistle stretch with 14 crashes. There were 10 on the Great Harwood stretch, six in Clayton-le-Moors and 11 in Rishton. And on Whalley Road there have been 26 crashes on the Clayton-le-Moors section and 13 in Great Harwood.

Council leader Miles Parkinson said measures were due to be implemented as part of the upcoming Pennine Reach scheme to make Whalley Road safer.

He said: “It is an area that is watched for speed by the constabulary and we are looking to add more speed indicator signs.”

Union Road is home to both The Oswaldtwistle School and St Paul’s CE Primary. A 20mph advisory speed limit during school times was introduced outside St Paul’s earlier this year.

Conservative group leader councillor Peter Britcliffe said the figures were ‘worrying’.

He said: “I am calling on the county to review safety measures and see what more can be done.”

Burnley Road in Accrington is the third most dangerous road with 22 collisions in three years.

Police have said the figures represent the most accurate records they can obtain although some accidents may be listed as Accrington if they occur in the surrounding towns.

Accrington has seen 565 accidents in the last three years, five of them fatal.

There were 103 crashes in Great Harwood and 96 in Oswaldtwistle, 72 in Clayton-le-Moors and 65 in Rishton. There were four recorded in Baxenden. Lancashire County Council said new safety schemes were either planned or in place, including a zebra crossing at Hyndburn Road roundabout and one on Blackburn Road and west of Thwaites Road, Oswaldtwistle.
