Supermarket chain Iceland has confirmed it is set to open a new store in Accrington.

The frozen food giant will move into the empty unit at Eastgate Retail Park following Morrisons’ closure in March.

The unit was also previously occupied by Netto.

Iceland bosses said they aim to open the new store by September but are unable to confirm how many jobs will be created.

A spokesman for Iceland said: “We are delighted to confirm that we have a new Iceland warehouse store opening planned in Accrington on Eastgate Retail Park.

“We are unable to confirm the exact opening date as yet.

“But are hoping to open in early September.”

The news comes as a further boost to Accrington’s retail offer after a miserable start to 2015.

The Observer revealed earlier this week how Lidl will open its newly rebuilt store on Hyndburn Road in Accrington on Thursday, June 25 creating up to 10 extra jobs.

It will be closely followed next month by the ‘Brickworks’ pub and restaurant further along the road, creating 45 jobs.

Morrisons, Marks and Spencer and Homebase all announced store closures in January.
