An inspirational volunteer who has raised thousands for charity has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Ada Gibson, who is a mother to three, grandmother to five, great-grandmother to 14 and great, great-grandmother to six, has raised funds for various charities by taking part in sponsored swims after learning to swim at the age of 75.

Ada, of Grane Street, Clayton-le-Moors, soon began completing sponsored swims at Mercer Hall Leisure Centre. When her health meant she could no longer swim Ada took up sponsored skipping to continue raising funds.

Daughter Barbara Wright, 72, said: “My mum has not been too well recently so we didn’t have a big party, but family came round. She also got a card from the Queen, which she is immensely proud of. She absolutely loves the Royal Family.

"Mum started swimming after her husband had died, from that day she started swimming for charity, collecting thousand of pounds. When she couldn’t swim any more she started skipping round Mercer Park, until serious illness stopped her charity work.”

Ada celebrated her 100th birthday on April 6.
