A young mum given the all clear from cancer last year has received heartbreaking news that it has returned.

Scans have revealed that cancer has spread to Gemma Nuttall’s lungs, brain and spine - despite her previously responding well to treatment.

She has been told there is nothing more than can be done - other than make her comfortable.

But Gemma, whose story has captured the hearts of Hollywood celebrities as well as our readers, has now bravely vowed to continue fundraising for charity .

The Helmshore mum, 29, and her family received the latest devastating diagnosis after she went to hospital complaining of back pain.

Since receiving the news, she said she wants her supporters - who previously raised more than £300,000 for revolutionary treatment in Germany - to continue to raise funds for the Make A Wish Foundation, who arrange experiences, or wishes, for seriously ill children.

Gemma, who has a four-year-old daughter Penelope, was originally diagnosed with ovarian and cervical cancer in 2014. But she had been given the all clear last October after immunotherapy treatment at the Hallwang Clinic.

She said: “I want to thank all the people that have helped and supported us on this dreadful journey - we would not have made it this far if it wasn’t for all their help.

“I’d like everyone to join now in our efforts to give something back to society and use our cause to help children and their families in similar situations.”

Helen Sproates, Gemma’s mum, said around £1,000 had been raised in the first two days since the family told supporters, who have included Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio, that the cancer had returned.

Helen, also of Helmshore, said: “It’s devastating - the cancer has come back of its own accord.

“It’s about the worst news any parent could hear - we were both traumatised when they told us, we were crying and so were the nurses.

"They’ve told us there’s nothing they can do other than make her comfortable.”

The family are in a race against time, as doctors are unable to predict how long Gemma has left to live.

She is continuing to receive immunotherapy in the UK and has been accepted for treatment at The Christie Hospital.

Helen said: “We thought we’re not the only ones who are in this situation - there are thousands.

"We thought maybe we can help and it would be nice for Gemma and Penelope, for them to help give something back.

"Gemma is such a giving person and this is her way of helping other people which is what she does best, even when her own life hangs in the balance.”
