Work to create a new roundabout and link road in Preston has hit further delays.

The work at Lightfoot Lane, close to Tom Benson Way, was scheduled to be complete by the end of 2018 but has over-run and delays can be expected to continue into the coming weeks.

Lancashire County Council is carrying out the work to provide access to the new Lightfoot Meadows estate, currently under construction by David Wilson Homes.

But Alan Eastham, principal engineer for the City Deal Delivery Team, said: "There has been a delay to the work at Lightfoot Lane, due to the weather and some circumstances beyond our control, such as when utility companies were able to be on site.

"We’re sorry for the disruption it has caused while we create this new roundabout and link road.

"This work should be completed within the next few weeks."

Once complete, the road will form the first 200m section of the proposed East-West Link Road, which will connect to the new Preston Western Distributor, a major new road scheme planned for west Preston.

County councillor Keith Iddon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "This new roundabout and section of road is an important step forward in the process of creating this new link road, which will benefit a growing area of the city.

"We'll do what we can to minimise the inconvenience during construction, and ask people to bear with us."
