COUNCIL bosses are hoping to save lives by bringing in 20mph speed limits on all new estates built in Hyndburn.

Unveiling the plan, leader Peter Britcliffe told a council meeting on Tuesday: "Statis-tics show that at 20mph there is much less chance of an accident being fatal than at faster speeds.

"We are looking to put this to the Cabinet at its next meeting and in the meantime I would like to hear people's views.''

After the meeting, Councillor Britcliffe added: "The onus would partly be on developers as the 20mph zones would be part of the planning permission for any new developments.

"The idea is both to reduce speeds and to raise social awareness by encouraging people to drive safely."
