MURDERED mum Caneze Riaz was extremely well-known and popular in Accrington's Asian community.

She was a community worker at the New Era complex and also worked for the Hyndburn Cultural Association based at the Scaitcliffe Community Centre.

She was a parent-governor at Hyndburn Park Primary School and chairman of the newly-formed Accrington Stanley Diversity Forum.

Tributes poured in as news of the tragic event unfolded.

Colleagues at the Hyndburn Cultural Association described her as a tireless worker for the community.

A spokesman said: "Friends and colleagues would like to express their shock and profound sadness at the tragic loss of a much-respected and dear friend and colleague.

"The tragic circumstances in which Caneze lost her life and the loss of her four daughters has left the community stunned.

"With her commitment and passion for the work in supporting all communities in Hyndburn, she demonstrated the high civic virtues that we are all striving for.

"Caneze did so much for the community in Hyndburn - especially young people and women. Her personality showed her to be a warm, kind and sincere person who was respected across all sections of our community. She was a beacon for building good relations between people of different backgrounds.

"Although a Muslim, she came from a mixed English and Pakistani background and was therefore well placed to understand the concerns and feelings of everyone.

"Her loss will truly be felt across the whole of Hyndburn and beyond. Caneze Riaz and her enthusiasm for life will be sorely missed by all."

The spokesman added that a book of condolence had been opened at the Scaitcliffe Community Centre.

A spokesman for the New Era Complex said: "Caneze had worked here for the past six years as a part-time youth worker.

"She was fantastic to work with and always very positive towards her work. She worked with a long line of young people but she was also very versatile and good at working with older people as well."

Accrington Stanley chief executive Rob Heys said: "We are confident that the energy and enthusiasm she put into starting the diversity project will see the activities continue for a long time to come, and the thoughts of us all are with her family and friends at this sad time."

Azid Mahmood, chairman of Hyndburn United Muslims, said: "She did a lot of good work in the community and was a very popular person. She worked for many good causes and was very honest and truthful."

Anayat Mohammed, of East Lancashire Together, said: "I spent three years working with Caneze and she was a very committed and intelligent person.

"In this day and age it is very difficult to find role models but I think Caneze went a long way towards supporting people and helping with the problems of the community.

"She was a very capable worker and her voice in the community will be sadly missed. I have nothing but high praise for her and for all that she has done."
