A FIVE-year-old schoolboy left fighting for his life after being hit by a van outside his school is out of danger and said to be doing well.

Little Mohammed Akbar, of Albert Street, Oswaldtwistle, stepped off a traffic island in front of St Paul’s C of E Primary School when he was in collision with a yellow Ford Transit van tipper last Wednesday.

Mohammed was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital but later transferred to Pendlebury Children’s Hospital.

He has since come out of intensive care and had treatment for a broken leg at Booth Hall Children’s Hospital.

Since the accident Mohammed’s family have expressed concerns as to why there was no lollipop lady based at the school.

Sergeant Pete Sculpher, leading the investigation, said: "Mohammed is improving every day and is now out of the danger zone."

Police are still appealing for the driver of a grey Isuzu pick-up truck to come forward as they believe he could be a crucial witness.
