A pensioner raised £500 for our Finley’s Friends Appeal by donating her birthday money.
Jean Wood of Burnley Road, Accrington, turned 70 on September 7 and held a party with around 70 friends and family at Accrington Golf Club.
And instead of receiving gifts for her landmark birthday Jean asked well-wishers to give her donations for Holly House.
Jean, a former medical secretary, said after reading about our Finley’s Friends Appeal in the Observer she decided to get involved.
She said: “At my age you have everything you want really and I decided to do this rather than get a lot of bits and bobs.
“I had a really nice time seeing everyone and chatting and they were very generous.
“There were people there aged between 80 and a seven-week-old baby. I saw the articles and thought I could do more good this way, these people do good work and they need the money.”
Jean added that she had heard of Holly House from her time as a medical secretary after writing up doctors’ notes and letters.
She also helps out at volunteer cycling sessions with adults with cerebral palsy at Wilson’s Playing Fields in Clayton-le-Moors.
Jean presented the money to Kelly Rosbotham, mum of three-year-old Finley who is the face of our appeal, as Kelly held her one-off stall in Accrington Market on Thursday, September 20. She raised £100.
Kelly said she was overwhelmed by the donation.
She said: “She came to the stall and I thought she wanted a cup or a magnet and she said I’ve got a check for £500 for you.
“It’s made my year I just cannot believe the kindness of one person, I’d been stood in the cold from 7am but it made me feel warm again, it’s just amazing.”
The Accrington Observer is trying to raise £20,000 for Holly House in Accrington which supports disabled youngsters.
We are raising money for specialist IT equipment to support the children at the Blackburn Road centre.
And we need your help.
We want you to hold fundraising events to help us reach our target or to donate a portion of money raised from other charity events.
The centre helped three-year-old Finley Rosbotham learn to walk and talk after he was born with part of his brain missing.
