Accrington Library has been named as in urgent need of further renovation.

The county council’s Regenerate initiative is set to continue with a further investment of £3.25 million over the next three years.

The decision follows the announcement earlier this year that the library was to receive a share of £1m towards a second refurbishment in the space of two years. A £250,000 refit of the library’s community history section was completed in early 2011.

Under the investment Accrington’s Carnegie Public Library has now been named as number one on a list of 15 libraries set for an overhaul.

County councillor Mike Calvert has decided that options for external funding to contribute towards the refurbishment of the whole library should also be explored.

Coun Calvert said: "Despite the fact that we’re having to face up to significant financial challenges, this investment illustrates our ongoing commitment to the county’s superb libraries.

"However, in light of the financial pressures, I must point out that planned and actual expenditure will be closely monitored by council officers."

The Regenerate scheme has resulted in 23 libraries being refurbished since 2007.

The main criteria for inclusion in the initiative are poor physical condition of the library’s public spaces, lack of flexible community space provision and movable shelving and the need for additional public facilities such as meeting rooms and public toilets.
