Winners in Accrington Market Online’s design a Christmas card competition have been presented with their prizes.

Hundreds of local children entered the popular competition after entry forms were distributed through primary and junior schools across Hyndburn.

The winners were chosen by star of TV’s ‘Storage Hunters’ Jesse McClure, who helped launch the Accrington Market Online scheme.

Daisy Holden, eight, a pupil at Hippings Methodist Primary School, in Oswaldtwistle, was picked as this year’s winner.

The winners pictured receiving their prizes on Saturday are, from the left, third place Tabetha Walmsley, second place Jacob Brady and first prize winner Daisy Holden. Also shown are Santa and one of his Accrington Market elves, Ella Davey (15).

Her colourful design showed Santa and his sleigh flying above five children of different nations all holding a banner reading ‘Happy Christmas, Peace on Earth’.

Daisy, who received 50 professionally printed copies of her winning card to send to her friends and family, said: “I drew children from around the world because I want the wars to stop and everyone to be friends.”

She also receives a £100 voucher to spend at Accrington Market Online and a bulging bouquet of sweets.

In second place was four-year-old Jacob Brady, who attends Baxenden St John’s CE Primary School.

Jacob drew Christmas trees on his card because they are one of his favourite things about Christmas, which he is really looking forward to.

In third place was eight-year-old Tabetha Walmsley, a pupil at St Andrew’s CE Primary School in Oswaltwistle, whose eyecatching design showed Santa on the roof of a colourful terrace of houses and was captioned ‘Merry Christmas Lancashire’.

Daisy's first prize winning design

Tabetha said: “I love to see decorations in people’s windows at Christmas so I drew lots of houses.”

She and Jacob each won 25 printed copies of their card and a sweet bouquet.

All the entries are now on display in Accrington’s indoor market, where the winners were presented with their prizes on Saturday.

A spokesman said: “With such a wide variety of stalls Accrington Market is a great place to buy your quality locally produced food and a huge range of gifts this Christmas.

“If you can’t get to the market in person, visit the Accrington Market website at www.accringtonmarketonline.co.uk to find out more.”
