A student from Accrington and Rossendale College has been found dead at his home.

Carpentry and joinery student Danny Collins, 17, was discovered by police on Wednesday after he had not been seen for several days.

A police spokesperson said offices attended a house on Chapel Street, Brierfield and found Mr Collins in the lounge. There are no suspicious circumstances.

Staff at Accrington and Rossendale College have spoken of their shock at the news.

Principal Lynda Mason said: "Both staff and students were shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Danny. Our thoughts are with his friends and loved ones.

Marc Wilkinson, programme area leader for carpentry and joinery said: "All of our course tutors have expressed what a lovely person he was and that he will not be forgotten.

"They intend to incorporate Danny's practical work into a mural outside his practical workshop in the New Year."

Police said his family have been informed and the file has been passed onto the coroner.

Mr Collins played rugby at Burnley Rugby Union Football Club.

A statement on the club website read: "It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Danny Collins. Our commiserations and thought are with Lee and family."
