A nativity scene has been trashed by ‘mindless vandals’, costing £300 to repair.
The crib on Barnes Square in Clayton-le-Moors was smashed sometime between Thursday, December 17 and Friday, December 18, however the figures were not stolen.
Police have now launched an investigation and an appeal to find the offenders.
Ward councillor Tim O’Kane said he was left ‘absolutely disgusted’ by the incident.
He said: “I can’t begin to express my absolute disgust at what happened to our crib.
“We need to know who the culprits are. Not rumour, not finger pointing, just plain fact.
“We have a close community in Clayton second to none.
“I apologise to Claytoners who have had their festive season ruined by this mindless vandalism.”
He added: “It has been repaired and the figurines are back in place.”
Police said the incident happened between 6pm on December 17 and 8am on December 18.
