TELEVISION antiques expert Eric Knowles has jumped on board to support the appeal.

Eric, star of BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, contacted the Observer after reading about the appeal to raise £50,000 for the Pals Chapel.

The Nelson-born celebrity still works closely with the Haworth Art Gallery, evaluating Tiffany Glass.

He said he couldn’t believe the news that the chapel was under threat and felt compelled to show his support.

He said: “It is such an important chapel, it would be scandalous for it to close forever. Here we have a building of national importance and I would definitely encourage everyone to support the appeal.

“What happened to the motto Lest we Forget?”

Eric now lives in Bucking-hamshire but visits Lancashire on a regular basis as his parents still live in Nelson and he has relatives in Colne.

The Burnley Football Club supporter said he also tries to watch Accrington Stanley whenever they play in the south.

As a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, Eric has become a leading authority on European and Oriental ceramics from the 17th to the 20th century, the glass of Tiffany and Lalique, and 19th and 20th century decorative arts.
