A CHARITY has welcomed a surprise Christmas present - covered in black and white fur with long spindly legs.

Santos the baby llama was born to mum Lil last weekend despite it being the end of the breeding season.

He has already attracted a lot of attention at Lords House Farm, Rishton, where staff have put him inside a barn to protect him from the cold weather. He will be given a special coat to ward off the freezing temperatures over the next few months.

Kath Thacker of the Wilpshire Road farm, which provides riding lessons for the disabled, said: "People always expect llamas to spit but they only do that as a defence mechanism. They are very friendly animals which can safely be stroked. We also take them on trekking days."

Santos will now take pride of place when the farm opens its doors for fund-raising in December. There will be a Santa's grotto with a real reindeer and a live nativity with donkeys, goats, sheep and llamas.
