Two mums from Baxenden are training for their first ever London Marathon.

Colette Mallabourn and Cathy McDermott are running in aid of charity Spinal Research and hoping to raise £3,600 collectively for the cause.

The duo are both members of Accrington Road Runners club and have run in marathons and half marathons before but never in the London race.

Colette, of Manchester Road, Baxenden, said the pair, who ran last year’s Great North Run in tutus, were both busy fundraising.

The mum-of-three said: “We contacted a couple of charities to see if we could run on their behalf and Spinal Research were keen for us to get involved, sending us packs and giving us the most help with fundraising ideas.

“I have tried to get in the London Marathon four times, so I am really looking forward to finally being able to run in it. We are both hoping to get under the four-hour mark.”

They have organised a charity football match on Sunday, March 3 which will see Blackburn Rovers supporters take on Burnley Clarets fans at the King George’s Playing Fields in Baxenden.

Colette said: “I am a Blackburn supporter and Cathy is a Burnley supporter.

“We have prizes from several area businesses and I want to thank them for all of their support.”

The match begins at 2pm and following the game there will be a raffle and games at the Alma Inn.

They have also organised a golf day and charity auction at Baxenden Golf Club on Saturday, March 9.
