ORGANISERS of Hyndburn’s biggest sponsored walk are hoping it will be third time even luckier this year.
The event raised around £65,000 for local and national charities when it was set up in 2006 and this increased to £75,000 last year.
Members of Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club now hope to do even better from this year’s event which has been scheduled for Sunday 11 May.
Rotarians plan the route and organise the day, while for a small entry fee walkers can support their own pet charities or good causes.
Once again, the route has been specially selected to take in the level, unspoiled fields around the Leeds Liverpool Canal, winding its way through lovely countryside as well as interesting former industrial sites.
The 10-mile walk along the canal towpath will start between 9.30am and 11am from the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors, and finish at Thompson Park, Burnley, where various events are planned.
For the first time there could be a boat cruising up and down the canal playing music.
The new Mayoress, Susan Johnson, well-known for her fund-raising qualities, will take part and it is hoped that at least two Coronation Street stars will also undertake the trek.
Walk organiser Fred Pickering said: “We have had two great days and we want this one to be even bigger and better. People can walk on their own or in a group, raising money for a charity, church, parent-teacher group, Scout or Guide group ... the list is endless.”
The entry fee is £3 if paid in advance or £5 on the day. Accompanied children under 12 can walk free.
Walkers are welcome to bring dogs, but they must be kept on a lead at all times and will not be allowed in Thompson Park.
