THE borough of Hyndburn turns 30 this year and the council is planning a huge three-day party to mark the occasion.

The celebrations will run from Friday 2 July to Sunday 4 July.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe told the Observer: "We want to see residents, councillors and staff past and present all get together to mark this special occasion."

"The main focus of the weekend will be the Mayor-making event on Saturday 3 July, which will feature a procession, a traditional civic service where choirs of children from local schools will perform and a civic lunch. There will also be a 70s disco so dig out those flares."

Councillor Britcliffe also appealed to anyone celebrating a special occasion that weekend, such as a birthday or marriage, to contact the council, as there would be a special table reserved for them at the lunch.

As well as the civic celebrations at the Town Hall, there will be a range of fun events for all the family in Accrington town centre.

Broadway will host a fair with rides and sideshows, plus an events stage with a range of entertainment.

There will also be a bustling continental and old French market.

Councillor Britcliffe went on: "This will be a fantastic weekend for all the family to enjoy. We'll even have a special 30th birthday cake made especially for the occasion by catering students at Accrington and Rossendale College."

"The plans for the weekend are still in their early stages at the moment, but we want this to be the biggest party Hyndburn has ever seen."
