An investigation has been launched after a fire tore through a former working men's club.

Four fire crews and police officers were called to the disused Straits Club on Mill Hill in Oswaldtwistle.

Lancashire Police confirmed they were called to the scene and an investigation is underway into the cause of the blaze.

Lee Cook, watch manager at Hyndburn fire station, said: “We were called to reports of smoke coming from the building.

“On arrival the ground floor was well alight. We gained access through the rear of the building and we requested two further appliances, an aerial appliance and a command unit from Fulwood.

“The extent of the fire was such that it took about 90 minutes to bring under control.

“There is an ongoing joint police and fire investigation. The building was empty and boarded up but has recently been purchased.

“The ground floor was severely damaged and there was a partial roof collapse.”

The incident happened at around 4.30pm on Friday, August 29. Anyone with information can call police on 101.
