ONE of two men arrested after police found a nail bomb in a Huncoat garden shed had to be rushed to hospital while in police custody.

Michael Thomas Gibbons, 25, of Rydal Close, Huncoat, appeared before Blackburn magistrates charged with conspiracy to create an explosive device and possession of gunpowder.

The court heard he was jointly charged with his father James Arthur Gibbons, 63, of Windermere Avenue, Huncoat, but he had been taken to hospital.

The court heard both men were arrested last week after police and Bomb Squad officers cordoned off Windermere Avenue and evacuated residents. A third male, aged 16, was also arrested but later released.

Claire Fanning, prosecuting, told the court a nail bomb was found in a shed.

She said the police had reacted to information provided by James Gibbons' ex-wife Carol.

Both men were remanded on bail with conditions of residence, not to contact her, her partner John Fife or her daughter Samantha Gibbons. They are both banned from entering Blackburn with Darwen where she lives. Both men are due to appear before Hyndburn magistrates today when the case will be sent to the Crown Court.
