Booze Corner in Accrington has stopped selling alcohol voluntarily.

The shop’s owners surrendered its licence after Police and Trading Standards officers submitted a licence review application to the council.

They caught the shop on Burnley Road selling booze and tobacco to under age teenagers during test purchasing operations last year.

Hyndburn Council confirmed that Booze Corner licensee Rizvi Syed has surrendered the alcohol licence.

The licence review hearing was scheduled for January 19.

In the licensing review application police officers said that Booze Corner ‘had clearly failed the objective of protecting children from harm’.

They recommended that the shop’s licence to sell alcohol should be revoked for three months.

Test purchasing operations were carried out by police and trading standards officers at Booze Corner in April last year and in October.

Tobacco was sold to a 15-year-old in April. Officers also witnessed a 16-year-old walk out of the shop with a bottle of vodka on October 29. And on Friday, September 2 officers found three men under 18 acting suspiciously in the rear alleyway behind Booze Corner.

One of the young people was in possession of two bottles of cider which he claimed he had bought from Booze Corner.

Mr Syed was challenged and after viewing CCTV footage admitted the offence. He received a Penalty Notice for disorder for selling alcohol to the under age male.

A council spokeswoman said: “The meeting of the Licensing Sub-Committee scheduled to review the premises licence for the Booze Corner, Burnley Road, Accrington has been cancelled.  The premises’ licence has been surrendered.”
