Hyndburn is preparing to celebrate the contribution of their men and women in uniform by marking Armed Forces Day as plans have been announced by the council.

The celebrations will begin on Monday, June 22 with the raising of the Armed Forces Flag at 10.15am outside Accrington Town Hall, after which, the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire will present the Armed Forces Day flag to Mayor Marlene Haworth.

Events will draw to a close on Saturday, June 27 with an Armed Forces family fun day in Gatty Park in Church from 1pm to 4pm with an opening ceremony at 12.30pm.

There will be a whole host of events on offer for people to enjoy including a Poppy picnic, stalls, children’s games, arts and crafts, music, singing, bowling and a sports competition.

The Parlour at Elmfield cafe will also be open to customers.

Mayor of Hyndburn Councillor Marlene Haworth, said: “Armed Forces Week is Hyndburn’s chance to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to service families, and from veterans to cadets.

“Please come along to the events and show your support for our Armed Forces, everyone is more than welcome.

“Thank you to all the organisations who have worked together to organise the Fun Day and to those who are taking part.

“Also many thanks to Cath Holmes and Nick Collingridge who, on behalf of the Accrington Pals Centenary Commemorative Fund, made a significant contribution towards the cost of the opening ceremony at the fun day.”

The event is free but any donations made will go to Byng House, Southport which is run by the Royal British Legion, providing break services for members of the Armed Forces and their families.

Armed Forces Day was started as an opportunity to show support to the men and women that make up the Armed Forces community.
