All Saints Grange Bowling Club in Clayton-le-Moors received a special Christmas present when a new spectator pavilion was completed on Christmas Eve.

The conservatory-type spectator facility includes carpet flooring, chairs and tables.

It comes after around £9,000 was secured from the Awards For All Lottery scheme.

Laurie Denton, club secretary, said he hopes it will encourage more people to take up the sport of crown green bowls now the work has been completed.

He said: “I am delighted that we have been awarded the funding from Awards for All Lottery fund to carry out improvement to the spectator facilities at our bowling club.

“We are committed to promoting a safe and caring environment in which older people can enjoy taking part in a game of crown green bowls and other activities that encourage the good health and well-being of our members.

“We have been bombarded with adverse weather conditions, heavy rain and storms over the past two years but now with the help of Awards for All we will be able cope even better than we have done before.”

Laurie said the club, which was first formed in 1910 as part of the Parish Church Institute, now has a record membership with more than 100 people. He said: “We have a very progressive management committee and are well known locally as ‘recycled teenagers’.

“We are delighted to receive this award and thank Awards for All for their help and guidance throughout the application process.”

An Awards for All Lottery spokesperson said the project is a ‘community organisation’ in Lancashire and the new spectator pavilion will help members in the area.

They said: “This will provide beneficiaries with a warm and suitable place to socialise and watch crown green bowling, with the aim of reducing loneliness and social isolation.”

All Saints Grange Bowling Club were one of a number of groups in the region to secure funding.
