A teenage boy has been left in a plaster cast after being involved in a collision with a hit and run driver.

A-jay Whittaker-Smith, 13, was crossing the road to get his hair cut when the incident happened, leaving him with a broken foot.

The female driver got out of the car, moved him onto the kerb, kissed him on the head and got back in her car and drove off.

His angry mum Lysa said: “It was about half past three on Thursday afternoon and A-jay was going to the barbers.

“The pedestrian crossing isn’t working on Blackburn Road as there’s roadworks but he’d checked both ways for traffic.”

A-jay, who lives on Elizabeth Street in Accrington, was crossing the road outside the Acorn Centre on July 24.

Lysa said: “A-jay told us the car just came out of nowhere and knocked him down.

“I’m so angry that the woman that hit him just left him there on the road.”

Lysa said nearby workmen called an ambulance and the police.

She said: “The ambulance staff rang us, so his dad Lewis ran down.

“They took him to Accrington Victoria Hospital with a broken foot, but they transferred him to Royal Blackburn Hospital because they said he might need surgery.

“Luckily it was a clean break. He’s in a half cast now, his foot is all black and swollen.

“I’m just grateful it was only a broken foot, it could have been so much worse,.He put his arm out to stop his head hitting the ground, the doctors said he was very lucky.”

A-jay, a pupil at Mount Carmel RC School, will be spending most of his summer holidays in a cast.

Lysa said she’s very grateful to everyone who helped A-jay after the incident.

Lancashire Police said they are investigating the incident.
