Hyndburn councillor Peter Britcliffe has been re-elected as leader - after all independant councillors abstained from voting.

Councillor Britcliffe's position as council leader had been under threat after the Consevratives lost overall control of the council chamber in the local elections earlier this month.

But at today's annual general council meeting Councillor Britcliffe managed to hang on after winning the vote 17 to 14 after an abstention from the four independent councillors.

Also at the meeting Councillor Malcolm Pritchard has been elected Mayor of Hyndburn and Conservative councillor Allah Dad was voted in as deputy mayor.
