THE WET weather did not dampen the spirits of hundreds of visitors who braved the elements to enjoy this year’s Accrington Carnival.

The theme for last Saturday’s procession was favourite films and the convoy was led by guest of honour Kenny Baker who played R2D2 in cult movie Star Wars, Carnival Queen Scarlett Jepson and Carnival Princess Dee Haworth.

The winner of the best float in the trade category was North Lancashire Training Group for their Willy Wonka-inspired creation. Accrington Sea Cadets claimed first prize in the non-trade category for decorating their float in the theme of The School of Rock.

Peel Park Primary School then hosted the main carnival event and hosted a number of activities including a fun-fair, craft stalls, charity information stands, bungee run, raffles, face painting and a penalty competition.

Mayor of Hyndburn Paul Barton said: "It has been absolutely superb. The floats were amazing and people had spent a lot of time and effort."

Kenny, who officially opened the carnival and spent time chatting to carnival goers, said: "I had a look at some of the floats and they were really lovely. I got to ride in a beautiful car and it really was a shame with the weather."
