Burglars have attempted to break into a church in Oswaldtwistle by smashing a window with a fire extinguisher.

The incident happened at the Immanuel Parish Church on New lane between 11.30am and 1.30pm on Tuesday, April 26.

The offenders approached the unlocked front door and gained entry to the entrance porch.

There they used a fire extinguisher to smash the window into the main area of the church and then threw the extinguisher through the broken window knocking over a wooden charity box containing cash.

Sgt Simon Holderness, of Accrington Police Station, said they were then either disturbed or were unable to get through the window and left without proceeding any further.

He added: “There were no sightings of the offenders but police inquiries are ongoing.”
