STAFF at Accrington’s Thomas Cook call centre will be formally given their notices next week before the operation comes to a close at the end of October.

Around 250 staff at the company’s Globe Centre site were told their jobs were in the balance in June – but many have since left because they were unhappy with how the company had handled the situation.

Members of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) have been working closely with employees to negotiate an adequate pay-out package.

Regional organiser Kevin Lucas said members had chosen not to strike over redundancy packages which did not take into account bonus schemes and commission.

He said: "The staff will be given their notices from 1 October and the vast majority will be required to work until 31 October.

"Although some staff have got longer notice periods, the employees are being allowed to leave early and still receive their redundancy pay.

"There will still be a presence at the Globe Centre site until spring next year as around 70 temporary jobs are created at the company’s IT department which deals with bookings and tickets."
